We recommend starting with a small amount of acrylic paint and medium, gradually adding the Powerwax while mixing with firm pressure using a palette knife. This product is fantastic. As a mixed media artist I have used it on canvas, paper, metal, rusted substrates, wood. It seals the work to a satin sheen beautifully with no stickiness or streaks at all. I also seal textured work with it. Adding colors to it is a breeze as well as clean up. The BEST is filling the cracks after using a crackle medium. Stencils, stamps, carving, texture rollers, all come through clean and can also easily create prominent textured depth. A tiny amount really goes a long way. Like a nickel size amount filled the cracks on a 4”x4” . Buy the larger can because it’s definitely worth it.

I’m finding the texture hard to work with. Very stiff and crumbly.
It looked creamy on videos I watched. So I get small grain size lumps in my paint.

This is nothing like the original Powerwax

I have been working with power wax and acrylic paints for about one year. The results have been great. I loved the texture I could create with it and the colors were vivid. As a person with many allergies, I really appreciated its lack of odors and fumes, as well as the very easy cleanup. Today I opened up a new can of Powerwax, looking forward to how it might have been “improved”. This new product is NOTHING like the original. It shouldn’t even have the same name. The product doesn’t act anything like the original- it has a strange “ drag “ to it when applying to your substrate. The colors don’t blend well and everything has a chalky look to it. In addition, the slow dry time is not at all helpful, especially when layering. Worst of all ,for me,it gives off strong fumes which caused my eyes to burn, my ears to itch and my nose to run. I had to open a window and it was 18 degrees Fahrenheit out! If you want to sell this as a new product, that’s fine, but PLEASE bring back the original powerwax and stop trying to pass this off as the same thing. It’s not.

We’d like to clarify that the product is not marketed as the original formula. Our website does clearly state that this is a newly formulated Powerwax. The formula was updated due to a drastic increase in raw material costs, which unfortunately made it impossible to continue producing the original version. While we worked hard to create a high-quality alternative, we understand that it doesn’t replicate your previous experience with the original formula.

We also want to address your concerns about odor. The new formula does have a slight scent due to its composition, and while it dissipates over time, we understand that this can be problematic for those with sensitivities. Your comfort and health are important to us, and we are sincerely sorry this caused you discomfort.

We appreciate your candid feedback on the texture, blending, and drying time, as this helps us identify areas for improvement. While we are unable to bring back the original formula, we remain committed to refining our products based on the needs of our customers.

Modest help for Acrylics

I've used cold wax for about five years and was super interested in the water-based version. My container came with the lid open and it will seal, some sort of manufacturing error, so I've placed the container in an overly large plastic bag to prevent drying out. I've done I've first few layers on a painting with collage elements, and the wax has worked well. I mixed in a variety of my water-based media and used additives to increase texture. I found the wax has a strong odor and it took significant time and work to mix in to the Acrylics. Eventually a smooth mix would be achieved, but it took quite a bit of time.

Took too long for it to dry with acrylic paints mixed in 4 days latter and it’s still soft.

We do realize this new formula takes a bit longer to dry and that will also vary with how thick you apply and what climate you are in. However, it will dry and provide a slight sheen and helps to blend your acrylics so beautifully in your painting. We'd love to hear if your project has now dried and have you tried to use thinner layers? Thanks for sharing your experience with us as all will help us improve in the future.
