This one is a happy accident. Powertex Universal Medium Matte Finish began as a batch of Transparent that came out of the mix with a soft amber tint and a matte finish instead — and it turned out to be one of the best-kept secrets for texture work. Because it's a true one-off from a manufacturing error, once this limited supply is gone, it won't be back.
It's become the perfect companion for texture powders, transforming them into high-quality air-dry clay, and it's just as wonderful on unbleached organic fibers like wool or plant fiber, where the warm amber tint blends right in instead of standing out.
A note before you dive in: this medium does not dry completely transparent — it carries a mattifying agent with a slight amber tint, so it isn't a substitute for our traditional Transparent Universal Medium. It shines brightest as a clay-making medium or for hardening natural fibers.
How to use it:
- Prepare your mixture — choose any of our texture powders (individually or blended) and combine with Matte Finish Universal Medium. More medium makes a texture paste; more powder makes a thicker clay.
- Create — sculpt, mold, or detail your project with the mixture. It applies smoothly and holds its shape well. Mix in other Universal Medium colors or pigments to customize the tone.
- Air dry — let your piece dry fully (time varies with thickness), then paint over the dried clay with any Universal Medium color or most paints.
